What will I need for work experience?

Work experience is a great way to get hands-on experience and build skills in construction. To make the most of this experience, it’s helps to come prepared with the right tools and equipment.

While every work experience gig will be different, here are some things you might need before you start:

Depending on the location and the type of work you’ll be doing, you may need a driver’s licence to get to different sites, pick up materials or meet with clients.

A white card is a special certification you need to work on construction sites in Australia. It shows that you have completed training to learn about safety rules and regulations in the construction industry. You can find out how to get a white card here.

This includes high-vis shirts and jumpers, heavy-duty and water repellent shorts and pants, and steel-capped boots. Check what is provided and will be needed.

On top of your workwear, you may need other safety gear depending on the type of work you’ll be doing. This might include a hard hat, safety goggles, ear protection, gloves, knee pads and respiratory masks. Your work experience coordinator will be able to confirm if you need to bring any specific safety gear or PPE with you to comply with workplace safety regulations.

Depending on the tasks you’ll be doing, you may need to bring your own tools or equipment. This can include basic hand tools such as a tape measure, hammer, screwdrivers, utility knife, and pliers. Many companies will provide the tools you need onsite, but it’s best to check with your workplace coordinator before you start.

It’s always a good idea to bring a notebook and pen to jot down important information, instructions, or any questions you may have during your work experience. This will help you stay organised and make the most of your learning experience.
